I
Ikarys
An Inhuman with bird-like wings that enabled him elongated, high-altitude flight. Ikarys served as a member of the Royal Guard and additionally acted as a scout. Ikarys’ uniform was outfitted with a complex series of horns that could be used to sound the alarm were threats to Attilan detected.
Ikarys was patrolling the night-watch on the evening that a Kree invasion force led by Ronan The Accuser laid siege to Attilan. He sounded his alarm, but the Kree forces were so large and swarmed with such veracity that the warning had little effect in preparing Ikarys’ fellow Inhumans for battle. Ikarys and many of his fellow guardsmen were captured by The Kree.
Later, following the War of Kings event, Attilan relocated to the Kree planet of Kon-Tarr. Ikarys had fought well during the war and he was elected by popular vote to act as the official consult, representing Inhuman interests within the Kree government. Presumedly, Ikarys’ consulship was dissolved once relations between the Inhumans and the Kree ultimately broke down; and he likely returned with the other citizens of Attilan to earth. Ikarys’ current whereabouts remain unknown.
Ikyr
A winged Inhuman with white plumage and avian features. Ikyr and his twin brother, Dedyr, acted as heralds, flying above Attilan and sounding bellowing horns to either warn of danger or announce celebratory tidings.
The two sounded their horns on the afternoon of Crystal’s wedding to Quicksilver, announcing that the nuptial ceremonies were about to begin. The names Ikyr and Dedyr are likely a play on the characters of Icarus and Daedalus from ancient Greek mythology.
Ikelli
An Inhuman from the secret sanctuary of Utolan. The Inhumans of Utolan are descendants of dissidents who left Attilan thousands of years ago, traveling to the Chimanimani Mountains of Zimbabwe where they built a new home. Over the years, the Inhumans of Utolan were forgotten by those of Attilan and, similar to Orolan, its existence was known only by a select few high up in the monarchy.
Unlike Attilan, Utolan possessed only a limited supply of Terrigen Crystals and it came to be that only a select few were chosen to go through Terrigenesis. Choosing who will or will not be exposed to the Terrigen Mists is determined by the ruling party of Utolan, a group known as The
Maternal Council of Elders.
Ikelli’s mother is a member of this Council of Elders and this may or may not have had something to do with Ikelli’s being one of the select few chosen to go through Terrigenesis. Exposure to the mists bestowed onto Ikelli the power to generate tendril-like appendages from her skin. These tendrils appear to be extremely strong and Ikelli can manipulate them with the utmost of dexterity, utilizing them in a unique and greatly effective fighting style. The full extent of Ikelli’s powers and how her transformation has effected her has yet to be revealed.
Ikelli is the older sister to the Inhuman, Flint. For reasons yet to be explained, Flint was adopted by an American family some time after his birth and he has had no memories of his birth family. Flint recently met Ikelli and their mother in the latest story arc of All New Inhumans.
In this story, Ikelli’s first appearance, it seemed as though Ikelli is up to some secret ulterior plot along with her cohort, a fellow Inhuman named Sanara. What exactly Ikelli and Sanara are up to remains to be seen.
Imprint
An Inhuman from a possible future timeline depicted in the pages Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 1 (Earth 691). In this future timeline, Loki had conquered all of Attilan and utilized its population to create gladiators to fight for his amusement. Imprint was one such gladiator. He possessed the ability to exude a corrosive enzyme from his palms, an acid that could eat through any substance.
Loki ultimately used his army of Inhumans in an attempt to invade and conquer Asgard and it was at this point that the Guardians of The Galaxy intervened. Loki’s army was defeated and he, Imprint and the other Inhuman gladiators were all imprisoned in the inescapable Black Canyon between Niflheim and Muspelhe.
Inferno
Dante Pertuz. A latent Inhuman whose transformation was triggered by exposure to the Terrigen cloud. Inferno can engulf his body in fire and fire super hot plasma bolts from his hands. Dante is still learning to control his powers and has not yet found the upper limit of what he can achieve.
Dante was sought out by Lash just after he underwent Terrigenesis. Lash saw that Dante was struggling to control his newfound powers and determined the youth was unfit to wield them. Deeming Dante ‘unworthy’ Lash set out to murder Dante and his sister, Gabby. Fortunately, Medusa intervened and was able to save Dante and Gabby from Lash. The two siblings were brought to New Attilan. There Gorgon was charged with helping to train Dante to better master his powers. When told he needed a proper Inhuman name, Dante’s sister suggested ‘Inferno.’ An apropos codename both in terms of Dante’s fire-based abilities as well as the connection to the first part of Dante Alighieri’s famous poem, The Divine Comedy, entitled ‘The Inferno.’
Prior to his transformation, Dante lived with his mother and older sister. Gabby has mentioned that the family is from Columbia, but it hasn’t been revealed whether or not Gabby and Dante were born in the States or if they immigrated with the family from Columbia. The father off Gabby’s child had passed away and Dante had been doing whatever he could to help the family out, shirking his own aspirations to be a drummer in a wedding band so to make money. Dante and Gabby’s mother had also been an Inhuman, although she was frail and batting the advanced stages of a terminal illness. Terrigenesis was too much for her and proved fatal.
Dante assumed that Lash had been responsible for his mother’s death and he volunteered to join a squadron sent out in search of Lash. Later, Dante felt a great deal of sadness and shame that he had wanted to kill Lash, that he had been so swept up in a murderous rage. His expression of remorse was one of the factors that helped convince Flint to leave Lash’s tribe and return with Medusa to New Attilan.
Dante became fast friends with his fellow new Inhumans, Flint and Naja. Together they helped overthrow a brief coup of New Attilan orchestrated by The Unspoken.
Dante has continued to experience a good deal of difficulty maintaining full control of his powers. When he becomes overwhelmed, his body bursts into flames and he has yet learned how to control it and douse his flaming form. Gorgon has dedicated himself to helping Dante to this end.
In the midst of a riot caused by Lineage, Dante’s arm was cut off by a marauding attacker. At first Dante was horrified by this, yet he quickly discovered that he could use his flame powers to regenerate a brand new limb. The full extent of this ability to regenerate body parts has yet to be shown.
Following this battle, Dante’s sister, Gabby, gave birth to her child. Although Gabby does not carry the Inhuman gene, her infant does and the child was born an Inhuman (having been exposed to Terrigenesis in a prenatal state). What this infant looks like and whatever powers he or she may possess has yet to be revealed.
Dante has been less involved in Inhuman adventures following the birth of his sister’s child. While Flint and Naja joined Crystal’s ambassadorial team aboard The RIV, Dante chose to remain on New Attilan. He has since joined Nur’s security team and assisted in the investigation of a theft sat The Quiet Room. It is assumed that Dante is continuing in his post as New Attilan security. Hopefully we will see more of him soon.
Irelle
An Inhuman adolescent who is one of the twin daughters of Auren, the former of chief of internal security of New Attilan. The identity and status of Irene and her sister’s father remains unrevealed. Irelle’s mother was killed in the line of duty by Maximus who used a mind-controlled Black Bolt to utter a sonic blast. Auran leapt in front of the blast, pushing her partner, Nur, safely out of the way. Nur survived and he has taken it on himself to act as a guardian to Irene and her sister, Treste.
Irele has more recently taken on the position of social assistant to Queen Medusa as well as a sort of spokesperson and media liaison. The tasks of this position include acting as press security, arranging the queen’s various appointments with dignitaries, politicians, and media appearances.
Behind the scenes, both Irele and her sister, Treste, have been conducting an investigation into the death of their mother as well as (possibly) discovering some means of bringing her back to life. Irele assisted Nur, Reader and Inferno in the theft of an antigen potion from the Quiet Room. The team ultimately discovered the identity of the thief (The Capo) and recovered the potion in time to maintain positive relations between New Attilan and The Enilux Corporation.
Irele is 16-years-old and of the age that most Inhumans undergo Terrigenesis. It appears as though neither Irele nor her sister have been exposed to Terrigen and it is possible that the two have actively avoided the Terrigen Cloud on the occasions that it has drifted through New York State. There is some sentiment among the Inhumans of Old Attilan that the Terrigen of the T-Cloud is not as pure or is in some fashion adulterated compared to that derived from Terrigen Crystals. It is possible that Irele and Treste are avoiding the Terrigen Cloud in the hopes that their Teregenesis can be brought about in the more traditional fashion. Time will tell.
Irellis
An Inhuman of the secret city-state of Utolan and the mother of Flint.
The Inhumans of Utolan left Old Attilan centuries ago over philosophical differences regarding the practices of Terrigenesis. Traveling half a world away, these Inhumans settled in the remote mountains of Mozambique where they built the city of Utolan and prospered there for many generations.
Unfortunately, centuries of living in isolation had caused the citizens of Utolan to become homogeneous in terms of their genetic composition and this has somehow caused the populace to be especially vulnerable to the negative effects of Terrigenesis. Over time, it came to be that exposure to the Terrigen Mists was fatal for the majority of the citizens of Utolan. And yet, Terrigenesis was still viewed as a central, guiding tenet of their religion, philosophy, and culture.
Desperate for a solution, the leaders of Utolan turned to the pseudo-science of eugenics, trying to match bloodlines in a way that would produce children who could survive the transformative effects of Terrigenesis. This project ultimately failed and the people of Utolan would go about determining who could and could not survive Terrigenesis by way of a cruel and dangerous process: a couple’s first born child would be exposed to the mists, if that child perished then their second child would be spared the mist, but if their child survived then their second child would also be exposed to Terrigenesis. These individuals who survived Terrigenesis were dubbed the cities ‘Champions’ and acted as the protectors of Utolan. Whereas the city itself was ruled by the Council of Elders.
Irellis and Flint’s father, Diyyen, fell in love and mated without the Elder’s consent. They had a daughter whom they named Ikelli. Due to the fact that their union was not sanctioned by the Council, it was determined that Ikelli would not be subjected to the Terrigen Mists. When Irellis became pregnant with their second child, however, it was determined that this second child, Jaycen (who would later go by the name Flint) would be forced to go through Terrigenesis.
The idea of his son’s being forced to go through Terrigensis was a terrible prospect for Diyyen and he absconded away with his son. They ultimately ended up in America where Flint was placed in the care of his adoptive parents in Minnesota. When Diyyen attempted to return to Utolan for his daughter he was killed for his treachery.
When Ikelli came of age she was subjected to the Terrigen Mists. She survived, yet it appeared that the transformation had left her in anguish. Even now, Irellis suspects that the use of her powers causes Ikelli great pain and agony… that it has all left Ikelli a changed, angry, and sullen young woman.
With the aid of Ana Kravenoff and Gorgon, Flint was able to track down the location of Utolan and was finally reunited with his birthmother. At the time, Ikelli and a group of coconspirators had engineered a coop to over through the current status quo of Utolan. This plan resulted in the mountaintop ceiling of the entire city being ruptured open just as the Terrigen Cloud was being toward Mozambique.
Irellis rushed to the front gates of the city, hoping that in some way her scarifying herself to the Terrigen Cloud might somehow act to save the rest of the city. Fortunately, Crystal’s Ambassadorial team aboard the RIV arrived in time to evacuate any citizens of Utolan who did not want to be exposed to the Terrigen Cloud. Irellis ultimately chose to remain behind and take her chances with Terrigenesis. It remains to be seen whether or not she survived the process and how the cloud may have transformed her.
Iridia
An Inhuman whose initial exposure to the Terrigin Mists had left her disfigured and in constant pain. Iridia had tried to manage with the hand that genetic fate had dealt her, but over time it became too much for her. She sought an audience with Black Bolt and asked that she be allowed to go throw Terrigenesis again, so that he might possibly change, become less ugly, or find relief from the chronic pain. Surprisingly, Black Bolt conceded to Iridia’s wishes and allowed her a secondary Terrigenesis.
Secondary Terrigenesis is normally forbidden and subsequent exposure to the mists can lead to dangerous, unstable mutations. And yet, for Iridia, the secondary exposure to the mists changed her into a beautiful woman with large, colorful, butterfly-like wings. Her pain had abated and her metamorphosis was something that brought comfort and happiness to the people of Attilan during a dark time (having just survived a terrible attack from Blastaar of the Negative Zone). Iridia’s current whereabouts remains unknown.
Iron Cross
Clare Gruler. A latent Inhuman whose Terrigenesis was trigger via exposure to the Terrigen Cloud. Clare’s father had been Helmut Gruler, an inventor and soldier who fought for Germany during World War Two. Helmut Gruler and a colleague had built a mechanical suit of armor somewhat akin to the armor Tony Stark would create many years later. Manning this suit, Gruler was dubbed ‘The Iron Cross’ and fought for the Axis powers during the war. Iron Cross was a frequent adversary of the Allied super teams, The Invaders as well as The Liberty Legion.
At one point, Gruler was severely injured and he made adjustments to his armor to sustain his life. This ultimately saved him and also allowed him a significantly elongated lifespan (albeit one in which he was essentially trapped within his armor). Living so long offered Gruler time to reflect and he came to greatly regret having served Hitler’s nazi party during the war. As a means of trying to atone for his past sins, Gruler continued on as Iron Cross only this time he served with the V Battalion (a European team of super heroes).
Some time later, Helmut had a daughter named Clare. In that Helmut was a cyborg, forever trapped within his suite, it remains unclear whether Clare is Helmut’s biological daughter or daughter by way of adoption. The identity of Clare’s mother remains unrevealed. In any case, Helmut raised Clare and she possessed the same acumen for science and bionics as her father. After Helmut perished in a mission, Clare decided to assume her father’s mantle. She built a new suite of armor and took on the name of Iron Cross. She too fought alongside the V Battalion.
Years later, Clare was exposed to the Terrigen Cloud and it activated her latent Inhuman genes. Terregenisis endowed her with the ability to bond with machinery on a molecular level. It additionally transformed her into something of a cyborg, an amalgam of organic tissue and living machinery. The powers that this bestowed Clare includes greatly enhanced strength and durability, flight, and the power to create laser cannons from her arms. She can also interface with computers on a psychological level, allowing her to download and process inhuman amounts of raw informational data. The full extent of Clare’s powers has yet to be revealed.
Soon after her transformation, Clare was kidnapped by the villain, Kurt Dagmar. Clare was rescued by The Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) and Clare went on to join The Winter Soldiers team, the All New Invaders.
Iron Cross had numerous adventures alongside the All New Invaders. In one such mission, Iron Cross took on the super powered neonazi, Über Alles. A deplorable racist and white supremacist, Über Alles expressed outrage that Clare, who is black, has assumed the name and mantle of Iron Cross. Über Alles and his gang were eventually defeated with the assistance of the timely arrival of Medusa and a team of Inhumans from New Attilan.
Medusa offered Iron Cross a place at New Attilan, stating that she is always welcomed at the Inhuman sanctuary. Clare politely declined, saying that she wished to continue on as a member of the New Invaders.
The All New Invaders title has since been discontinued and it is unknown whether or not the team is still operating in the Marvel Universe. Iron Cross has not been seen from in some time now and hopefully she might soon make an appearance in the pages of one of the Inhumans comics.
A quick note on the name ‘Iron Cross.’ The Iron Cross (or ‘Eisernes Kreuz’) is a military honor awarded to soldiers who demonstrate excellence and selflessness in battle; in some ways it is analogous to the American Medal of Valor. Although the Iron Cross is sometimes associated with the nazi party, the Iron Cross actually dates back to the Prussian Kingdom of the early 1800’s and was awarded to soldiers who fought in the the Napoleonic Wars as well as World War I. During World War II, Hitler misappropriated the Iron Cross, adding a swastika to its center. Helmet Gruler and later his daughter, Clare, chose to keep the name Iron Cross as a means of helping to disassociate the symbol from nazism and reestablish it as a symbol of the more honorable and virtuous aspects of German history.
Iso
Xiaoyi (last name unrevealed). A latent Inhuman whose transformation was triggered by exposure to the Terrigen cloud. Xiaoyi was born in a remote and rural area of Mainland China. Her parents very much wanted to have a son and were quite disappointed when their child turned out to be a girl. Xiaoyi was also born quite premature and was a very small infant, from which she was given her name, “Xiaoyi” which is Cantonese for ‘small one.’
Growing up, Xiaoyi was exceptionally bright, yet she was never afforded the chance to go to a real school. Instead, Xiaoyi relied on teaching herself by way of the internet and various books that she would read when he parents were not looking.
When the Terrigen Cloud passed over China, Xiaoyi underwent Terrigenesis and gained the ability to create and control isometric spheres within which she can alter gravitational pressure. In short, she has moderate control over gravity and spherical vacuums that are somewhat akin to miniature black holes. The full extent of these abilities has yet to be discovered. Terrigenesis also left a pattern of diamond like protrusions to appear on the skin of Xiaoyi’s face. Later, Xiaoyi discovered that, with concentration, she can make these diamond-shaped protrusions temporarily disappear.
It is possible that Terrigenesis has additionally augmented Xiaoyi’s already impressive intellect. Of late, she has demonstrated an aptitude for science, astrophysics, and genomics that is closing in on being on parr with that possessed by Hank McCoy (a foremost authority on such matters in the marvel Universe).Xiaoyi’s parents were terrified by her her initial Inhuman transformation. When the military came to their farm as part of a census for those affected by the Terrigen Cloud, Xiaoyi’s parents tried to send them away, afraid of what Xiaoyi might do were she to feel threatened.
Unswayed, one of the officers pushes Xiaoyi’s parents aside and tried to enter the home. He was quickly by blown back by an energy wave. The army’s tanks were ordered to fire on the house… and it was at this point that the Inhuman, Reader, intervened.
Reader had been tracking new Inhumans and he stepped in as the tanks and rifles fired – he used one of his various powers to temporarily freeze time. Reader introduces himself to Xiaoyi, claiming that he could explain what had happened to her and offered her refuge were she to come with him. Xiaoyi quickly agreed and did not even want to take time to say goodbye to her parents. She felt that they never wanted her nor understood her and it would be better were they to simply think she had been killed by the soldiers.
Reader took Xiaoyi to Italy where he brought her to The Ennilux Corporation, a secret syndicate run by a fellow Inhumans. Reader had actually been employed by Ennilux to seek out powerful new Inhumans for their own purposes. Having trouble pronouncing Xiaoyi’s name, the Ennilux technicians dubbed her ‘Iso.’
When it ultimately dawned on Reader what exactly the Ennilux leader had planned for Xiaoyi and how it would effectively kill her, he changed his mind and rescued her once again. This resulted in a wild chase that ultimately ended with Reader teleporting himself and Xiaoyi to New Attilan. There the Inhumans of New Attilan fended off the attacking forces of The Ennilux Corporation… a conflicted that was ended once Black Bolt seemingly destroyed the Ennilux leader.
Embracing the new, Inhuman name of ‘Iso’ Xiaoyi decided to remain on New Attilan and becomes a member of the new team of new Inhumans (along with Flint, Naja, Inferno, and Nur). Iso was quite upset with Reader when he opted to leave, it made her feel abandoned and she continues to harbor a resentment toward him.
While Iso’s powers are quite impressive, there is something particularly special about her… something that both The Ennilux leader and Black Bolt appeared to notice. When Lineage attempted to use the Inhuman Codex to transform a group of humans into devolved savages, Iso was able to wrestle the codex free and use it herself to undo Lineage’s spell.
Following The Secret wars event, Iso has continued on as a valued member of the community of New Attilan. She has taken a position as lab assistant with Hank McCoy in his ongoing efforts to find a means of preventing and undoing the deleterious effects the Terrigen Cloud has on the Mutant populace.
Iso assisted the Uncanny Inhuman team in their mission to save Ahura from Kang The Conquerer. She later accompanied Medusa and Ahura when they visited Black Bolt’s quasi-speakeasy, The Quiet Room. While there, Iso stepped in to prevent a catastrophe when The Leader and The Mad Thinker became engaged in a game of oneupmanship that threatened to destroy a large portion of New York City. Iso used her powers to create microscopic vacuum spheres in the brains of the two villains, effectively slowing regional cerebral blood flow and temporarily reducing the pair of mad geniuses into mere simpletons. In so doing, Iso was able to convince the cognitively diminished villains to defuse their destructive devices. It was a very neat trick and a good demonstration of Iso’s ability to combine her powers with her impressive intellect.
Ixchel
An ancient Inhuman who led a group known as The Mayapan. This was a fellowship of Inhumans who posed as Mayan deities some 1000 years ago. These individuals began as citizens of the ancient Mayan Empire who had wondered off to a secluded section of the countryside. They came across a spring that was connected to a subterranean cache of Terrigen Crystals. They drank from the spring, exposing themselves to the Terrigen. The Terrigen-infused waters proved fatally poisonous for most of these individuals, but for a small handful of them it triggered Terrigenesis.
Ixchel led this group and assumed the role of the Jaguar Goddess. She possessed magical abilities as well as enhanced strength and durability.
The Mayapan ultimately returned home and used their newfound powers to take over the Mayan Empire, demanding that they be worshiped as gods and that a series of pyramids be constructed for them. The Mayan people eventually rebelled against these Inhuman overlords and somehow managed to defeat and destroy the Mayapan.
Ixchel, the last surviving member of these Inhumans, fled into an astral realm along with the disembodied life essences of her fellow Mayapan. She remained there in stasis for over a thousand years until she was awoken by a fissure cracked into the astral realm, accidentally created by the super-beings, She-Hulk and A-Bomb.
Released, Ixchel manifested a giant ziggurat in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. She drained the life-force from She-Hulk, Lyra, and A-Bomb, using the energies to reincarnate her fellow Mayapan.
The Red Hulk and Alpha Flight investigated the creation of this Mayan Pyramid and engaged the Mayapan in a tremendous battle. The Red Hulk was ultimately victorious and was able to restore She-Hulk and the others, forcing the Mayapan to again flee to the astral realm. This was the last that the Mayapan have been seen from and it is presumed that they continue to be imprisoned on an astral plane.
